On Wednesday Oct. 21, Yorktown-Somers traveled to Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School to face Mahopac-Carmel, and Coach Brittney Pisano was going along with the season long drift.
“We’re all going faster and faster,” she said, and despite losing 92-78, the red-green wave can’t be denied.
The Yorktown-Somers duet turned around last year’s 1-7 record into a winning 6-3 2026.
She started with the team’s state qualifier. “Ansley (Edelmann) is crushing it,” said the coach.
Making the cut for the 100 fly last week, the senior took second in the 100 fly and 200 freestyle. Edelmann also teamed up to take first in the 200 freestyle relay with Olivia Sun, Norah Frawley and Katie Kurth and second in the 400 freestyle relay with Norah Frawley, Paige Edelmann and Ava Burch.
Olivia Sun also had her coach and New York State taking notice.
“She is close to qualifying in the 100 fly,” said Pisano.
1:02.09 was good for third place and she did one better in the breast stroke. The freshman took second place with a time of 1:15.17.
Another second went to Sophia Bukhover in the 50 fly and the delve is always doubled edged. “The 50 fly is hard because you’re trying to go as fast as everyone around. But you quickly do it, and you’re done,” the Husker clarified.
On the other end, her fifth place finish in the 500 wasn’t a loss. The sophomore beat her PR by 15 seconds.
“I’ve increased my kick and technique,” she explained the jump from last year.
Two places ahead, Makenna Geraghty believes the long distance race leaves plenty of room to make up a difference. “You have so many opportunities to drop time,” she said.
Under water, the lap numbers flashed prove the grind - until she sees a 17. “I start speeding up and use all the energy I have left,” said Geraghty.
Alyssa Diaz had no lack of in the 200 freestyle and not having a big day on the board didn’t zap her kinetics in the least.
“Everybody is super sweet and very supportive,” said the Somers Tusker. “Even though I got last place, everyone was cheering me on.”
Her fastest time was the result, and the senior brought it back around.
“I just like to be here to support my team,” she assured.
In the 200 freestyle relay the synergy goes without saying, and Smera Thekkenmar was happy to do her part in moving her team up a notch.
“I saw the girl in lane five, pushed myself on the last turn and overtook her,” said the Tusker.
So third place with Victoria Aguirre, Diaz and Geraghty, the constant jockey for position propels the excitement and cheers.
“It’s exciting and you can see it. The race changes from the time they dive in and by the last lap, there’s always a different finish,” said Pisano. “No one is ever written off until the end.”
The post season right ahead, the sentiment definitely applies, and the team can’t wait.
