People often ask me, “What’s the difference between Yorktown and Yorktown Heights?” My answer is always the same—it’s no different than the relationship between Mohegan Lake and Yorktown, or Shrub Oak and Yorktown. This usually gets a puzzled look, so let me explain.
Yorktown Heights, like Mohegan Lake, Shrub Oak, Crompond and Jefferson Valley, is one of five hamlets that make up the Town of Yorktown. All are part of one unified town. It’s that simple.
And that’s part of what makes Yorktown so special—its diverse hamlets, each with its own unique character, coming together to form one vibrant, connected community.
Yorktown comprises of about 37,000 residents, spans close to 40 square miles and offers something for everyone. From peaceful, tree-lined neighborhoods and scenic outdoor spaces to a revitalized downtown, award-winning schools, and a rich history—Yorktown truly is a place where families thrive and community spirit shines.
Yorktown is home to 18 distinct neighborhoods including Teatown, Croton Heights, Huntersville, Kitchawan, Sparkle Lake, Jefferson Valley, Crompond, Mohegan Lake, Shrub Oak and Yorktown Heights—just to name a few.
Each neighborhood offers its own charm and serenity, all within reach of the town’s thriving business districts and public spaces.
Yorktown is defined by its stunning natural beauty. With access to incredible parks, lakes and trails, it’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
Favorites like Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park, Turkey Mountain and the North County Trailway offer year-round opportunities for hiking, biking, fishing or simply enjoying the fresh air.
Yorktown’s business hamlets are flourishing. From family-owned restaurants to boutique shops and professional services, our local economy is strong—and growing.
You’ll find unique dining experiences at places like Our Place, Benvenuto II, The Gramercy, Jewel of the Himalaya, La Villetta Pizza & Pasta, Hudson Valley Steak House, Little Sorrento’s, Savannah’s, Don Pablo’s and Hacienda Sausa—just to name a few.
Yorktown continues to invest in its parks and recreational spaces. We’re proud of our modernized facilities, dozens of youth sports programs, playgrounds, pools and more.
Top facilities include:
Granite Knolls Recreation & Sports Complex
Woodlands Legacy Field Park
Patriot Skate Park
Jack DeVito Veterans’ Memorial Field & Track
These venues not only serve our youth but bring the entire community together.
Yorktown’s role in the American Revolutionary War adds a deep sense of heritage to our town. Did you know that Yorktown was originally called Hanover, and that Benedict Arnold passed through here when he was still a free man?
Our town respects and preserves its past while embracing progress for the future.
Yorktown is proudly served by two outstanding school districts:
Lakeland Central School District
Yorktown Central School District
Our schools provide students with a well-rounded, quality education in a supportive and forward-thinking environment. And when it comes to school spirit—few things beat a Lakeland vs. Yorktown rivalry game, whether it’s football, basketball or baseball. And the best part? After every game, the students "hug it out." That’s the kind of respect and camaraderie we foster here.
At its core, what makes Yorktown truly great is its people. This is a family-friendly town filled with neighbors who care for one another, volunteer their time, support local events and come together to build a better community every day.
Whether you’ve lived here for generations or just moved in—you are Yorktown.
I am proud to call this town my home, and I am even prouder of the unity, compassion and resilience that define our community.
Sergio Esposito is a member of the Yorktown Town Board and is running for re-election in November.
