YORKTOWN, N.Y.—The Yorktown Lions Club is requesting community support for their annual Thanksgiving/Holiday Turkey Drive.
Last year, the number of turkeys collected increased from 111 to 260. This year’s goal is to surpass 300.
A few local supermarkets are providing free turkeys to those shoppers who spend a certain amount within a given time. The Lions would like local residents to consider donating those free turkeys to the annual holiday drive. The Lions are also accepting hams and turkey breasts. Last year one family donated five turkeys.
To make the collection easy, the Lions have arranged four turkey drop-off days. The first will be on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 1-3 p.m. near the Lakeland Administration Building in Shrub Oak. Look for the Lions cooking hot dogs for the Veterans’ Day Parade participants.
The second drop day is at Uncle Giuseppe’s (380 Downing Dr, Yorktown Heights) on Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 3 to 6 p.m.
The next drop-off day will be Friday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the gazebo at Jack DeVito Veterans' Memorial Field & Track (Veterans Road and Commerce Street in Yorktown Heights).
The final day will be Monday, Nov. 25, at the Acme supermarket at Triangle Shopping Center, from 3-6 p.m.
Those unable can visit Lions’ website at www.yorktownlions.com to register your donation. All donors will receive an acknowledgment that may be used for tax purposes.
The Yorktown Lions will deliver the turkeys to Mildred E. Strang Middle School, First Presbyterian Church on Route 202, the veteran's support organization My Brother Vinny, and to St. Mary’s Church on East Main Street in Mohegan Lake. Teams of volunteers will then organize turkey baskets – with all the trimmings. The turkey baskets will then be distributed to local families. If you are not able to donate a turkey, ham, or turkey breast, you may make a monetary donation at the Yorktown Lions website – www.yorktownlions.com.
