Welcome to “News & Notes,” where we look at the happenings here in Westchester County.
In the good old days, my children’s favorite question was “How do we do this Dad?” That question is now being answered, more times than not, by AI or Google. Oh well, I guess it gives me more time to write this week’s “Missing those quizzes” edition of “News & Notes.”
National Diabetes Awareness Day is on Nov. 14. This day aims to raise awareness about diabetes, its prevention and the support available for individuals living with the condition. To learn more about this important day, check out worlddiabetesday.org.
As my wife will tell you, I am often easily scared, but I think I am ready for the Owl Walk at Mianus River Gorge on Nov. 15, from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. During the walk, Chris Nagy will call to the Eastern Screech Owl, Great-Horned Owl and Barred Owl and we’ll listen for who’s who. As the owls will soon begin the nesting season, you will learn some owl biology including typical owl behavior. Remember to bring a flashlight… I may bring two.
The team at Lasdon Park will celebrate Veterans Day with a Civil War experience. Children will bake Civil War era cookies and interact with Civil War era toys and games. In the Veterans Museum, children will take a hands-on tour of the Civil War exhibit and learn about veterans.
I think my thumb just got a little greener mentioning that the Bedford Audubon Lecture Series continues at the Katonah Village Library on Nov. 19, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The holiday elves have tip-toed in to the Thrift Shop run by the wonderful Women’s Civic Club of Katonah. The shop, located at the Memorial House on Bedford Road (next to the firehouse), has been decked with holiday decorations for sale at bargain prices. Stop in any Thursday, Friday or Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and see what treasures you can find.
The Town of Bedford Veterans Day Celebration honoring all U.S. Military members will be held on Sunday, Nov. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Bedford Hills Community House. We hope to see you there for an afternoon of camaraderie, good food, beverages and live music as we celebrate America's veterans.
Our sports radio show “The Clubhouse” has another fun program set for Nov. 19 on WGCH AM1490, at 7 p.m., from The Hub at Hotel MTK in Mount Kisco. Hope to see you there.
On Friday, Nov. 21, the Bedford and Katonah Presbyterian Church's youth groups are collaborating on a Midnight Run to bring food and essential items to the homeless in New York City. You may donate new or gently used men's clothing and women's toiletry items. Please contact jackie@bedfordpreschurch.org for more information.
Our friends at the Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps are looking for volunteers. It is a great way to meet your neighbors and all training is provided with no experience necessary. Sounds like a great idea to me.
We hope everyone will take time on Nov. 11 to remember and honor our veterans. We can never thank them enough.
