Town marks grand opening of Airport Park adaptive playground

MAHOPAC, N.Y.—The new adaptive playground at Airport Park in Mahopac is now officially open.

Town and state officials held a grand opening Tuesday evening (Aug. 5) to mark the occasion. The project was made possible by a $250,000 grant secured with the help of state Sen. Peter Harckham.

“Inclusive playgrounds are more than just accessible—they are vibrant spaces where children of all abilities can play, learn, and grow together,” Harckham said. “They not only break down physical and social barriers but also cultivate a community that shares its values.”

Harckham thanked Town Supervisor Mike Cazzari, the Town Board, the Recreation and Parks Department, and the community “for proving that positive things can happen when everyone works together.”

The ribbon-cutting took place during the town’s National Night Out celebration, with community members of all ages joining Harckham and Cazzari to officially open the playground.

“Thank you to Sen. Harckham for all his support. Each and every year he comes through for Carmel,” Cazzari said. “This playground is an awesome addition to our community that everybody can enjoy.”

The playground includes slides, monkey bars and swings. The equipment is wheelchair- and ADA-accessible, multisensory, and developmentally friendly—designed for children of all abilities to play together.

The $250,000 grant came from New York’s State Aid to Municipalities (SAM) program. Harckham has helped deliver more than $35 million in funding to communities throughout the 40th Senate District, which includes northern Westchester, eastern Putnam and part of Rockland counties.
