Somers Cross Country Claims Fourth Straight League Title

SOMERS, N.Y. - The boys and girls cross country team were in motion on Oct. 8 for the championships at Somers High School, and the finish line was the only thing stopping them. Second place for the boys wasn’t bad, but the girls rose to the top again.

The girls took their fourth consecutive league title, and 22 points was the margin of victory.

Individually, Fidella Swana of John Jay crossed first, but the next three finishers set the tone for the team championship. Mia Sandolo was second at 19:57, Julia Duzynski was third (20:30) and Julia Aquilino came in at cleanup (20:34).

In addition, Brooke Fazio (20:50) and Kaya Duzynski (20:51) made some noise, and then the boys did more than set their game to cruise control. Second place, Coach Mike Lacko was beaming.

“Yesterday was a night to remember for our cross country team,” he assured.

No doubt, Aidan See was the first to cross. At 18:54.4, the sophomore was the highest Tusker finisher at 6th.  Christian Lobasso was next in tenth (19:24) and Gianni Bernardi was seconds behind to finish 12th.

It was also senior night, and Lacko continued the praise. Sean Maguire, Aiden Maguire, PJ Goff, and Ellis Wintle, he boasted, “These young men have been an integral part of our team for the past four years, consistently demonstrating dedication, hard work, and exceptional athleticism. Their contributions to our program have been invaluable, and we're so proud of everything they've accomplished.”

The coach’s admiration and appreciation didn’t end there either.

“I'm also incredibly proud of every single member of our Cross Country team. This group of talented athletes has shown incredible growth and improvement throughout the season. Their dedication to training, their positive attitudes, and their unwavering support for one another have made them a true joy to coach," Lacko concluded.
