Putnam County marked its 214th anniversary with the grand opening of a new Veterans Museum at the county’s Veterans Memorial Park on June 12, an effort officials said will preserve the stories and sacrifices of local service members for future generations.
The museum was unveiled on Putnam County Day and represents a collaborative effort involving the county Historian’s Office, Veterans Service Agency, Department of Public Works, Parks Division, Planning Department, Joint Veterans Council and other departments and organizations.
County Executive Kevin Byrne said the project was funded through the county budget with support from the County Legislature as part of a broader commitment to preserving the county’s history and honoring its veterans.
During the ceremony, officials recognized State Assemblyman Matt Slater with the county’s Exemplary Public History Award. Slater secured $50,000 in state grant funding for the project, helping to offset a significant portion of the museum’s cost to taxpayers.
Byrne said that the museum is intended to serve as a lasting tribute to the men and women who served in the nation’s armed forces.
“The museum stands as a tribute to the brave men and women who served our nation and helped protect the freedoms we enjoy today,” Byrne said. “We are proud to preserve and share their stories for future generations.”
The new museum is located at Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park and features exhibits highlighting the contributions and experiences of local veterans throughout the county’s history.
