This New Yorker has been championing women’s reproductive rights for over fifty years. On November 5, I will flip my ballot over and vote a clear “YES” on Proposition 1, the Equal Rights Amendment. I shall also be voting, with gratitude and pride, to re-elect my New York State Senator, Pete Harckham.
The ERA is on the ballot, large part, thanks to Pete Harckham and his actions on the Senate floor. In 2019, he codified Roe v. Wade into New York State Health law, preventing extremists from infringing on the private lives of women across New York. He also passed the Comprehensive Contraceptive Care Act (CCCA) that requires insurance companies to cover contraceptive medicines without a co-pay.
Senator Harckham is deeply troubled that the widespread tactic of leaving women’s right to privacy up to the states has left millions of women nationwide with limited access to healthcare. No question, national Republicans and the Supreme Court are threatening our right to privacy, our right to bodily autonomy, and our right to reproductive health. Not here in New York, says Pete!
I am saddened, though not surprised, that Pete Harckham’s opponent is openly opposed to the Equal Rights Amendment, to reproductive freedom, and to extending rights to the LGBTQ+ community.
I hope you will join me voting “Yes” on ERA Proposition 1 – and in voting to re-elect Pete Harckham. Thank you.
