On Veterans Day, Somers Honors All Who Served

SOMERS, N.Y. - A large crowd turned out on a sunny but windy Veterans Day in Somers to honor military men and women for their service, love of country, and willingness to sacrifice for the common good.

There was a flag-waving parade that ended at Ivandell Cemetery, where the Monday, Nov. 11, ceremony took place.

(Alas, the town’s 1917 Model T Ford, which usually leads the march with Somers Historical Society trustee Arnie Guyot behind the wheel, was sidelined by mechanical problems.)

Patriotic songs were sung by the Somers Middle School Advanced Choir, the touching poem “America’s Promise,” which was written by U.S. Marine Vietnam veteran Rick P. Martinez, was read by Tyler Fazio, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, inspiring speeches were made by Town Supervisor Robert Scorrano, County Legislator Vedat Gashi, Assemblyman Matt Slater, and Lion Kate O’Keefe, organizer of the event. Red, white, and blue wreaths were solemnly placed, a moment of silence was observed, and prayers were offered by Rabbi Robert Weiner of Temple Beth Am of Northern Westchester and the Rev. Father Matthew Breslin of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Veteran Joseph Manna, who served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict, was the keynote speaker.
