KATONAH, N.Y. - The student-athletes on Harvey’s cross country team capped off their season on Friday, Nov. 1, in true championship form with the girls team winning the first-place trophy in the HVAL Championships and Ally Zimmerman and Felipe Torres each capturing the top prize in their respective races. The meet hosted by the Forman School on the trails at the White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield, Connecticut, featured runners from seven schools – Harvey, Wooster, Williams, Christian Heritage, Watkinson, Forman, and Westover.
The Harvey girls won the league championship over defending champion Wooster by a score of 30-33. Eighth grader Ally Zimmerman also won the individual championship, completing the course in 20 minutes and 27 seconds. Zimmerman’s feat, along with excellent finishes by teammates. seventh grader Ella Adler and ninth grader Lilah Groff of Waccubuc, secured the championship for the girls team. Adler finished fourth in a time of 21:29 with Groff coming in sixth at 22:05. By virtue of their top-10 finishes, Zimmerman, Adler, and Groff earned individual All-HVAL honors.
Harvey coach Christian Coscio knew going into the meet that the girls race would be close. He was impressed with the way the girls battled to win it. Coach Coscio said, “With about one mile left in the race, we were in a position to lose by about 5-6 points; however, in the last mile, our girls did everything they needed to win the meet.” The coach added, “I am beyond proud of the efforts of those girls who wanted nothing more than to bring home a championship, especially for our seniors who have spent the previous three years watching the boys win.”
The boys team, who came into the day as the three-time reigning HVAL champions, finished third in their race with Torres leading the way. He finished first among all the boys in a time of 17 minutes and 18 seconds. Torres led from wire to wire in what Coach Coscio called “a gutsy race.” Sophomore Aidan Garcia of Mount Kisco finished fourth in a time of 18:16. Torres and Garcia earned All-HVAL honors.
Reflecting on the day’s events, Coach Coscio took a great deal of satisfaction from his team’s performance to wrap up their season.
“We achieved our goals with two individual winners and a team championship,” Coscio said.
In more team award news, Lilah Groff earned the Sportsmanship Award.
“Throughout the meet, Lilah consistently cheered on athletes from all teams, not just Harvey's,” Coscio added.
The cross country season is not entirely over for some Harvey athletes. On Monday, Nov. 4, a small group of runners head to Van Cortlandt Park for the NYSAIS Championship meet.
