YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. — After 10 years leading the board of trustees at the John C. Hart Memorial Library, Catherine Richey has officially stepped down from her role.

Her decade of volunteer service to the Yorktown community was recognized at the Town Board meeting on Sept. 2.

Richey was first sworn in as a trustee in August 2015 and began a second term in August 2020, serving what Town Supervisor Ed Lachterman described as “10 dedicated and uninterrupted” years.

During her tenure, Richey participated in the hiring of four library directors and played “a key role in the renovation of libraries, public restrooms, the main Community Room, and the installation of first individual study rooms,” Lachterman said. He also credited her with supporting the expansion of the storytime room to meet growing attendance.

“She has led with unwavering dedication, adopting the challenges of advocating for our funding and resources and fostering space that welcomes all people, regardless of background,” he said.

Richey expressed gratitude to Lachterman, Councilman Patrick Murphy — the Town Board liaison to the library — and other board members for their support of Hart. She noted that while the role sometimes came at the cost of family dinners, the experience was always worth it.

“It’s been a joy and an honor,” she said.

Library Director Yvonne Cech called Richey “a tireless advocate for literacy and access” and said her “contributions will be felt for many years to come.”

Kathleen Law-Imperato was appointed to the library board of trustees later in the meeting. She will serve a five-year term, set to expire in August 2030.
