NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Hercules, King Arthur, and Coco Chanel walk into class together. Each argues their case for why they deserve recognition for their accomplishments and contributions to humanity. However, only one can be crowned winner and take their place in the hallowed halls of North Salem's Hall of History.
"I completely changed the world of fashion for women, from tight corsets to more breathable, loose, comfortable, and easy-to-move-in styles. This allowed women to start working in the factories while men were out at war," said sixth grader Sadine, dressed in a tweed suit as Coco Chanel. “This trend led to a rise in feminism.”
Oct. 31 is more than an ordinary day for sixth grade students in history class at North Salem Middle School. For more than 60 years, the date has marked the highly anticipated Hall of History competition, where students bring iconic figures from the past to life and explain how their chosen character made the most significant impact on history. Social studies teacher Jim Savarese and English teacher Lynn Colwell oversee this annual project.
In the weeks leading up to the big day, students select an important historical figure to research, employing a combination of online sources and books. They delve beyond facts and figures to understand the lasting impact of their chosen individual. With this knowledge, students craft engaging, persuasive speeches from the perspective of their characters and practice their public speaking skills. Using their research, students immerse themselves in their characters, assembling elaborate costumes and props to transform themselves into their historical icons.
Ollie wore a tablecloth that his grandma helped sew into a toga. He crafted a flashing thunderbolt using cardboard, paint, and LED lights to complete his look as Zeus.
"I've been interested in Greek mythology for years, so it was an easy choice," said Ollie, who found it challenging to narrow down the many Zeus stories he had learned for his presentation. He made his argument to the crowd with a captivating presence and a sense of humor. "I think I should be in the Hall of History because I am the king of the gods and very skilled in my craft. Without me, none of you would exist today," he said.
Students presented in small groups, each hoping to earn a spot in the finals. Many argued that their intelligence, kindness, bravery, and persistence were the reasons they deserved to win. Contenders advanced to the final competition before their cheering classmates and a faculty and administrator judging panel.
For this year's induction honor, congratulations go to Ellie as Cleopatra for achieving Best Costume and Charlotte as Boudica for winning the award for General Excellence.
Transforming herself into Cleopatra, Ellie wore gold ribbons in her braided hair, sparkling snake earrings, strappy sandals, and embellished a gown with flowing fabric and more ribbons.
"I am not fighting for my kingdom and wealth. I am fighting as an ordinary person for my lost freedom," said Charlotte, speaking as Boudica, Queen of the Iceni tribe. She began her speech with a powerful call to rally troops for a revolt against the Roman army. “I am a powerful leader and warrior, and I am known for fighting for what I believe in.”
