SOMERS, N.Y. - The community is rallying around a Somers family after the tragic shooting death of a Somers High School student earlier this week.
Just before midnight on Monday, Oct. 28, a mother and her two sons were shot at the Crossroads housing complex on Route 6 in Baldwin Place. The incident allegedly stemmed from a domestic dispute.
Michael Raimondi, 15, was killed and his mother and younger brother were transported to an area hospital in critical condition.
The suspect, Fernando Jimenez, 40, was captured on Tuesday morning after an extensive manhunt in Putnam Valley.
Jimenez was arraigned before Somers Town Court on charges of Murder in the 2nd degree, two counts of Attempted Murder in the 2nd degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd degree, all felonies.
He was remanded to Westchester County Jail without bail and is due back in court on Nov. 4.
In the wake of the tragedy, a fundraising effort is underway as the family faces the long road ahead.
A GoFundMe campaign to help with the costs of medical care and funeral expenses has already raised more than $144,000.
The website contains a plea for the community to show solidarity with the family in their time of need:
"We’re reaching out during a moment of profound heartbreak on behalf of Christina and her two beloved sons, Matthew and Michael. Recently, this family endured a devastating domestic violence incident. Michael, a cherished 15-year-old son and brother, tragically lost his life, and now Christina and Matthew are both in critical condition. As Christina fights for her life, she faces the unimaginable reality of having to bury her child. Their road to recovery will be long, arduous, and filled with immense challenges.
Christina is a loving, devoted mother who has always put her family above all else. Matthew, her surviving son, is a bright, kindhearted young soul who brings warmth to everyone around him. Together, they’ve shown remarkable strength and resilience, but they cannot face this alone.
Your generosity, in any amount, will go directly towards their medical care, therapy, funeral arrangements, and the support they need to start healing. Please, let’s come together to show them that they are not alone—that we’re here for them in this fight.
From the depths of our hearts, thank you for any support you can offer, whether through a donation or by sharing this message. Together, we can bring hope and relief to this family in need."
