Early morning fire destroys basement of Mahopac home

Posted

A fire ravaged a Mahopac home’s basement early Saturday morning (June 27), but officials report that thanks to fire alarms all occupants escaped safely before firefighters arrived.

The Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department (MFVFD) was dispatched to a reported structure fire on Orchard Road at about 3 a.m. Crews arrived to find flames in the basement and heavy smoke throughout the residence.

Firefighters, assisted by neighboring departments, quickly brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading further and protecting nearby property.

Officials said everyone inside the home safely evacuated before emergency crews reached the scene. Fire officials noted that the incident underscores the importance of working smoke alarms in every home.

Assisting at the scene were the Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department, Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association, Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Putnam County Medic 3 and the Putnam County Fire Investigation Team. The Carmel Fire Department stood by at Mahopac Falls headquarters to provide coverage during the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
