47 gun-related arrests made countywide

Westchester County law enforcement recovered 48 firearms, including eight ghost guns, and made 47 arrests in connection with gun-related crimes between April and June, according to statistics released this week by District Attorney Susan Cacace.

One of the firearms was recovered in Yorktown: an assault-style rifle allegedly possessed by Charles Waryha, 50, who was arrested by Yorktown police on April 9 and charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, as Yorktown News previously reported on the case.

Waryha is scheduled to appear in Yorktown Justice Court next on Nov. 12.

Countywide, Yonkers had the most firearm recoveries, with 18, followed by White Plains with eight and Mount Vernon with six. New Rochelle had four, Greenburgh three and Eastchester two.

The recovered firearms included 39 pistols, three revolvers and four rifles, in addition to two shell casings. Six pistols and two rifles were ghost guns — unserialized firearms that can be manufactured using 3D printers or assembled from partially finished components. Seven of the eight ghost guns were seized during alleged sales.

Approximately 32 percent of those arrested lived outside Westchester County, including five people from the Bronx, four from Connecticut and two from Kentucky, the District Attorney’s office said. Others came from New York City, Massachusetts, Arkansas and Georgia.

Of the 47 people arrested, 40 percent were ages 21 to 30, 28 percent were 31 to 40, 21 percent were 20 or younger, 9 percent were 41 to 50 and 2 percent were 61 to 70.

“It is important to remember that these statistics represent more than numbers on a page,” Cacace said on Oct. 14. “Every firearm recovered is a potential act of violence prevented, an innocent life that may have been saved, and the commitment of law enforcement who put themselves at risk day in and day out to protect our communities.”
