Somers soccer scores six to sink Sailors

SOMERS, N.Y. - On Tuesday, Oct. 6, Somers hosted Hendrick Hudson at the high school, and while the visitors came in as the Sailors, the wind certainly wasn’t at their backs.

Somers scored 14 minutes into the game and added two more first-half goals en route to a convincing 6-0 victory.

The Tuskers got right to work. Off a penalty kick by Connor Sheldon, the ball deflected to Harper Ritson, who swung his leg, but goalkeeper Aaron Mendez won the one-on-one battle at 38:06.

The Tuskers weren’t done, though. Milan Sath raced toward the goal line, and even though the goalie got there first, the forward fired a hard shot into his midsection at 37:30.

The Hen Hud defense held firm, and the Sailors went on the attack. Michael Arias sent the ball ahead, finding Ethan Ramos in stride as play unfolded dangerously around the Somers net.

The Tuskers converged at 31:15 to clear the threat, but Hen Hud continued to press. The Sailors eventually earned a free kick that Jhostin Robles put on target. However, Somers goalkeeper Nick Chao leaped and made a two-handed grab to preserve the scoreless tie.

The offense took the cue.

Trevor Keimig intercepted the ball at midfield, worked his way to the sideline and found Kenji Todo inside. The midfielder fired a shot that deflected off a defender and landed at Ritson’s feet. With plenty of room to work, the senior made no mistake, putting Somers on the board at 26:10.

Two minutes later, Ritson showed he didn’t need nearly as much space. Settling a long ball on the right, he maneuvered between two defenders, created an opening and fired home his second goal to give Somers a 2-0 lead.

Hen Hud kept its head up, but Somers continued to have the upper hand.

On a free kick from 35 yards out, the Sailors sent the ball into the box, but Danny Semenza rose above the crowd and headed it clear.

A few minutes later, Todo made a similar defensive play before Somers struck again at the other end.

After a Hen Hud defender missed a clearance attempt, Sheldon pounced on the loose ball and found Keimig, who sent it to Sath on the left. The forward worked to maintain possession, dribbled into space and eventually found enough room to fire home Somers’ third goal of the half.

With a commanding 3-0 lead at the break, the Tuskers carried their momentum into the second half.

Ritson added another goal to complete his hat trick, and Somers cruised to a 6-0 victory.
