NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The North Salem community gathered in the Town Meeting Room on Tuesday, Nov. 11, to honor local veterans, their families, and all who have served our country during the town’s annual Veterans Day ceremony.

Originally planned to be held outdoors, the event was moved inside due to chilly temperatures. Supervisor Warren Lucas welcomed attendees before the ceremony opened with Girl Scouts from Troop 2949 presenting the colors leading the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by an invocation from James Gould of American Legion Post 1866.

In his remarks, Supervisor Lucas reflected on the meaning of Veterans Day, emphasizing that it is a day centered on people rather than pageantry.

“It’s about the men and women throughout our town and nation who serve quietly, without looking for recognition,” Lucas said. “And it’s about the families who waited, prayed, worried, and supported them.”

He reminded attendees that the holiday began as Armistice Day in 1918, marking the end of World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, and has since come to honor all who have served.

Lucas recognized the estimated 60 veterans living in North Salem, representing every branch of the military. He spoke of their enduring dedication, the lessons of service—discipline, teamwork, resilience—and the importance of remembering those no longer with us.

“Our country has never been perfect,” he said, “but it’s always been full of people determined to make it better. Veterans are among those who have lived that commitment most fully.”

He also called on the community to ensure that future generations understand the cost of freedom and the importance of caring for those who return home.

The ceremony concluded with closing words from Deputy Supervisor Peter Kamenstein, who offered a benediction.

“May we leave here today with renewed appreciation for our veterans and their service,” Kamenstein said. “Let the courage of those who served inspire us to be better neighbors, better stewards of our community, and better keepers of the peace they fought to preserve.”
