Giving Tuesday

Your Giving Tuesday guide to local charities

Posted

Today is Giving Tuesday — a reminder that our communities stay strong not just because of what we build, but because of how we show up for one another. Across Westchester and Putnam, countless nonprofits work quietly and tirelessly year-round to support families, feed neighbors, protect animals, lift up those battling illness, and offer hope in moments that feel hopeless.

Before we spotlight some of the regional organizations doing extraordinary work, a quick note: most of the towns we cover have their own Rotary, Lions Club, Relay for Life teams (in support of the American Cancer Society), Toys for Tots efforts, and local food pantries. If you’re able, please consider supporting those hometown staples. They’re often the first to step up when a neighbor needs help. Of course, this is not an exhaustive list of organizations, and we encourage you to give to the local club, chapter and/or organization that is closest to your heart. If your organization is not listed in this story, please contact us and we'd by happy to highlight your good work at a future date.

Below are several regional nonprofits whose impact extends across our coverage area. A donation of any size — truly — makes a difference. You can click directly on the organization's name to take you to their website.

Feeding Westchester

The backbone of hunger relief in our region, distributing millions of meals each year through food pantries, mobile markets, and community partners. They ensure struggling families have healthy food on the table — not just during the holidays, but all year long.

United Way of Westchester and Putnam

From emergency financial assistance to early-childhood education and workforce development, United Way supports thousands of local families. Their 2-1-1 helpline alone is a lifeline for neighbors facing crisis.

Putnam Humane Society

A no-kill shelter that rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes dogs and cats. Their dedicated team works tirelessly to give every animal a second chance — and to match pets with the loving homes they deserve.

Support Connection

Based in Yorktown, this organization provides free, year-round support services for people affected by breast and ovarian cancer. Their counselors are compassionate, experienced, and often survivors themselves.

Putnam/Northern Westchester Women’s Resource Center

Offering shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, and education, the WRC stands with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Their work saves lives — and gives survivors a path toward safety and independence.

United for the Troops

Started by a local family, this volunteer-driven nonprofit sends comfort items and care packages to U.S. service members stationed around the world. Their mission is simple and heartfelt: make sure our troops know they’re not forgotten.

Friends of Karen

Serving families throughout the Hudson Valley, they provide emotional, financial, and practical support to children battling life-threatening illnesses — and to the parents and siblings walking that journey alongside them.

New Dawn Family Resource Center

Focused on strengthening families and preventing child abuse, New Dawn offers parent coaching, crisis support, and youth programs that help break cycles and build brighter futures.

Opengate

Headquartered in Armonk, Opengate supports adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through residential programs, day services, and individualized support plans. Their team is deeply committed to helping each person live with dignity, independence, and meaningful connection to the community.

The Pantry

The Pantry envisions a Northern Westchester community where everyone has enough nutritious food and is empowered to thrive. They serve an average of 700 families every week from 21 local communities, which means over 2,000 individuals every week are well nourished enough to work, study, grow, and play.

Support the work that connects our communities

Local journalism plays its own role in community health — shining light, telling stories, and keeping neighbors connected to one another. If you value the work Halston Media does across our towns, we would be grateful for your support this Giving Tuesday. On the link, you can select the newspaper you'd like to support.
