MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. - Real power is knowing when not to use it.
Mount Kisco recently got a gold star for participating in GridRewards by Logical Buildings, an initiative that aims to reduce energy consumption, especially during peak demand periods.
The free app notifies users when demand is high and encourages them to take simple actions like lowering their AC, unplugging devices, and turning off lights.
Users can earn cash rewards, reduce their electricity bills, and help the planet by balancing the grid and reducing the need for fossil-fueled peaker plants, which are bad for the environment, inefficient, and often located in disadvantaged communities, according to Sustainable Westchester’s Lauren Brois.
(Based in Mount Kisco, Sustainable Westchester is a nonprofit, municipally-led service provider that focuses on climate solutions through programs, relationships with governments, businesses, organizations, and individuals, and environmental advocacy.)
Last summer, the village earned $8,212 in rewards – the highest amount of 13 participating Westchester municipalities, Brois said. Mount Kisco residents collected a total of $2,955 for lowering electrical usage during key times.
Brois presented officials with a framed plaque lauding that success at the Village Board’s April 7 meeting.
“You’ve been great partners in sustainability. We’re really grateful to the village for your partnership,” she told them.
