Republican Tanner McCracken handily defeated Democrat Gwen Burke in the race for the 8th District seat (which includes parts of Mahopac) of the Putnam County Legislature with 63.4 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results from the county's Board of Elections.
McCracken, a former Mahopac School Board member, received 2,862 votes to Burke's 1,649 to win the seat formerly occupied by Republican Amy Sayegh, who opted not to seek reelection.
McCracken has lived in Mahopac for more than 20 years after moving here from Queens with his family in 2006. A Mahopac High School graduate, he earned a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in public administration and public policy from SUNY Albany.
He has worked in the New York State Senate for more than five years and currently serves as a senior staff member to Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt.
McCracken was elected to the Mahopac Board of Education in 2020 and served six years.
He ran on a platform that called for reducing the tax burden on homeowners, improving government transparency and revitalizing downtown Mahopac.
