Thanks to the keen instincts of Putnam County Undersheriff James Menton, two suspects are now facing a litany of charges after they allegedly stole more than $1,000 in groceries from TOPS supermarket in Carmel Hamlet.
On Tuesday evening (Nov. 18) while in the area of the TOPS market, the undersheriff said he noticed a man acting suspiciously before entering a vehicle occupied by additional individuals. The vehicle then exited the lot, and Menton followed discreetly while conducting a registration check. The inquiry revealed that the license plate displayed on the vehicle did not belong to that car and was registered to a completely different vehicle.
Menton conducted the traffic stop on I-84 westbound near Exit 65/Route 312. After speaking with the driver and determining he did not possess a driver’s license, Menton requested backup and additional personnel arrived to assist with the investigation. Responding units included Sgt. Christopher Irwin and deputies Richard Planamenta, Joseph Landow, Brian O’Connor, Joseph Coletti, and Daisy Sari, as well as Brewster Police Officer Anthony Russo.
The driver of the vehicle, Shadell Robinson, 27, of Montgomery, N.Y., who police said has one prior misdemeanor arrest, was taken into custody and charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. a misdemeanor.
The front-seat passenger, Quinnel Bonneau, 36, of Newburgh, who police called “a career criminal,” was alleged to have stolen approximately $1,082 worth of groceries from the TOPS store located in Putnam Plaza on Route 6. Bonneau was subsequently charged with grand larceny, a felony. During the stop, police said he was also found in possession of a small amount of crack cocaine and charged was with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.
Bonneau and Robinson were processed by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Sheriff Brian Hess commended Menton for his proactive actions and attention to detail and thanked the responding deputies and assisting Brewster Police officer for his coordinated and professional response.
