Two cars crash into Mahopac businesses on Route 6

Posted

Two vehicles crashed into a commercial building housing the Wash Me Laundromat and International Barber Shop on Route 6 in Mahopac Saturday afternoon, Oct. 31, damaging support columns and prompting firefighters to install temporary supports to prevent the roof from collapsing.

According to the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department, emergency crews responded to 551 Route 6 at approximately 3:53 p.m. and found that both vehicles involved in the crash had struck the building.

Firefighters arriving at the scene made sure all occupants had safely exited the vehicles before assessing the structural damage.

The impact had knocked out two support columns, compromising the overhead roof. Firefighters installed temporary shoring to stabilize the structure.

One person was transported to the hospital for medical evaluation. The extent of that person's injuries was not immediately available.

The crash slowed traffic along Route 6 for approximately 50 minutes while emergency personnel secured the scene and the damaged vehicles were removed.

The Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department was assisted by the Carmel Police Department and Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Once the vehicles were removed and the scene was stabilized, responsibility for the property was turned over to the town of Carmel building inspector for further evaluation.

The cause of the crash was not immediately reported, and it was unclear whether the damage would affect operations at either business.
