A traffic stop in Carmel Hamlet led to the seizure of nearly 45 grams of crack cocaine and suspected heroin and the arrest of a Queens man on felony drug charges, police said.
Carmel Police Officer Michael Arini stopped a Mercedes-Benz sedan on Gleneida Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, after observing the vehicle cross the double yellow line while traveling west on Route 6, according to police. A DMV check showed that the vehicle's inspection had expired.
During the stop, Arini requested assistance from K9 Officer Vincent DeSantola and his partner, Pietro. Police said Pietro conducted a narcotics sniff around the vehicle and alerted to the odor of narcotics.
A subsequent search allegedly uncovered a scale with white powder residue in the center console. Police said officers also searched the locked glove compartment, where they found a zippered pouch containing two plastic bags with approximately 44.6 grams of crack cocaine and 10 glassine envelopes of suspected heroin.
The driver, identified as Owen Guo, 23, of Fresh Meadows, N.Y., was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class B felony; first-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, a Class D felony; and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor.
Guo was taken to Carmel Police headquarters for processing and then sent to the Putnam County Jail pending arraignment in Carmel Town Court. Police said the Mercedes was impounded.
