Search underway for missing Mahopac man in Adirondacks

Posted

A multi-agency search is underway in the Adirondacks for a 73-year-old Mahopac man whose recreational vehicle was discovered at a remote campsite after he had not been heard from for more than two weeks.

New York State Police said Craig K. Streeter was reported potentially missing Aug. 17 after state Forest Rangers located his RV at campsite 36 along Moose River Road in the town of Inlet. Rangers observed no apparent activity around the vehicle and were unable to locate Streeter.

State Police said Streeter is known to travel and camp in remote areas and can be out of contact for extended periods, but authorities launched a search after his vehicle was located and he could not be found.

Streeter was last seen Aug. 2 at a Stewart's Shop in Indian Lake, where police said he was wearing a dark-colored long-sleeve shirt and jeans. He left the store in his RV and was also last heard from that day.

State Police said Wednesday, Aug. 19, that a multi-agency search remained active and there were no indications of foul play.

Streeter's niece, Olive Chen, wrote on Facebook, "[My uncle] has been missing for several days, and we're all incredibly worried about him."

Carmel Police are assisting with the investigation locally. Chief Anthony Hoffmann told Mahopac News that State Police asked Carmel detectives to conduct interviews in the Mahopac-Carmel area but the chief noted that State Police are leading the investigation. Hoffmann said his detectives have completed those interviews but are ready to assist further should the State Police ask.

Authorities are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who was traveling or camping along Moose River Road or in nearby remote camping areas who may have seen Streeter or his RV.

As of Thursday afternoon, Aug. 20, State Police and the state Department of Environmental Conservation had not announced that Streeter had been located or issued a subsequent official release providing additional details about the search.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators is asked to contact New York State Police at 518-897-2000.
