A 74-year-old Brewster man was killed Thursday morning (Dec. 11) when the vehicle he was driving collided with a pickup truck towing an excavator on a trailer on Route 301 in Carmel Hamlet.
Carmel police were called to the scene near the intersection of Route 301 and Smokey Hallow Road at around 9:15 a.m.
Police said their preliminary investigation indicated that a 2024 Subaru Impreza was traveling eastbound on Route 301 when it rounded a curve and struck the truck and excavator. The driver of the Subaru, Vito Planamento, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The impact also caused a secondary collision involving two additional vehicles. One of the other drivers sustained minor injuries.
At this time, unsafe speed appears to be a contributing factor in the cause of the accident.
Route 301 was closed between Gipsy Trail Road and Dixon Road for several hours during the investigation.
The Carmel Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Kent Police Department, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Emergency Services, New York State Police, Putnam County Fire Police, Carmel EMS, Carmel Fire Department, NYSDOT, and LifeNet.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional information may be released as it becomes available.
