A 33-year-old Mahopac man has been arrested on multiple felony charges, including rape and sexual offenses involving underage girls, following an investigation by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Joseph J. Filingeri was arrested Oct. 16 and charged with seven felony offenses after investigators uncovered evidence of alleged sexual crimes involving multiple minors, according to Sheriff Brian Hess.

The investigation began late on the night of Oct. 6 when sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a missing teenage girl who was believed to be with a 33-year-old man.

Deputies located the girl, who was highly intoxicated, in a vehicle with Filingeri. Investigators determined that Filingeri had purchased alcohol for the teenager, authorities said.

The girl was transported to a hospital for evaluation, and Filingeri was initially arrested on charges of unlawfully dealing with a child and endangering the welfare of a child.

Following that arrest, the case was turned over to the Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which conducted a further investigation in coordination with the Putnam County District Attorney’s Office.

That investigation led to Filingeri's arrest on Oct. 16 on the following charges:

  • Facilitating a sexual performance by a child with alcohol, a Class B felony.

  • Use of a child in a sexual performance, a Class C felony.

  • Three counts of disseminating indecent material to minors in the first degree, Class D felonies.

  • Promoting an obscene sexual performance by a child, a Class D felony.

  • Rape in the third degree, a Class E felony.

Filingeri was arraigned in Carmel Town Justice Court, where bail was set at $100,000 cash, $200,000 bond or $300,000 partially secured bond.

He was remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of bail.

Authorities did not disclose the ages of the alleged victims or provide additional details about the circumstances surrounding the additional sexual offense charges.
