The Mahopac community gathered to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with several ceremonies throughout the day and into the weekend. The traditional morning ceremony at the Mahopac Volunteer Firehouse 9/11 Memorial Garden included prayers, tributes to Putnam County residents who lost their lives, the lowering of the flag to half-staff, the ringing of the fire bell and the playing of taps.
Rabbi Sarah Freidson of Mahopac’s Temple Beth Shalom offered prayers, while local artist Monica Craig presented a commemorative watercolor to former Commissioner George Jones and the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department.
Carmel Town Hall also paused for a moment of silence in front of its 9/11 memorial before Putnam County held an evening vigil at the Putnam Heroes Memorial at Spain Cornerstone Park in Carmel Hamlet. Those ceremonies were followed by a memorial Mass at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on Sunday (see page 3).
