A leaking propane tank prompted a response from the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) and the Putnam County Hazardous Materials Team on Saturday afternoon, June 27, temporarily closing off an area along Route 6 while crews safely vented the tank.
Firefighters were dispatched at 1:49 p.m. to the area of 418 Route 6 after a 911 caller reported a leaking 30-pound liquid propane (LP) tank.
According to the MVFD officials, the tank had just been filled when it began leaking inside a vehicle as the owner was driving. The driver quickly removed the tank from the vehicle, placed it in the parking lot of a nearby business, and called 911.
Upon arrival, the incident commander requested assistance from the Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services Hazardous Materials Team.
Hazmat technicians determined the safest course of action was to flare off the remaining propane, allowing the gas to burn under controlled conditions until the tank was empty.
Firefighters and Hazmat personnel remained at the scene for about 90 minutes before the tank was deemed safe for removal.
No injuries were reported.
