MAHOPAC, N.Y.—Carmel police officers and the Mahopac Fire Dept. with EMS personnel saved the life of a Mahopac resident who had suffered a heart attack and showed no signs of a pulse when they first arrived.
On Friday, Sept.26, at around 3:45 p.m., Mahopac Fire Dept. was dispatched along with Carmel police, the Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Putnam County EMS to a home on Lakeview Drive for a report of a 67-year-old male in cardiac arrest.
Police said that upon arrival, the patient was found unconscious, and without a pulse near the residence’s side entry.
Assistant Fire Chief Brandon Timmins, along with Carmel PD officers Vincenzo Rocco and Vincent DeSantola, initiated CPR. EMT Yadhira Amaya applied a defibrillator. Officer Willie Gabay assisted with respiration using a bag valve mask. Following the defibrillator shock, the patient regained a pulse and began shallow respirations.
Carmel Ambulance and Putnam County EMS arrived shortly after and assumed advanced patient care. Carmel PD expedited transport by escorting the ambulance through busy Route 6 to the Taconic State Parkway, enroute to Hudson Valley Hospital. During transport, the patient continued to maintain a pulse and began breathing more effectively with assisted ventilation.
Police said that as of the evening of Sunday, Sept. 28, the patient was reported to be in stable condition.
“It’s a powerful reminder of the outstanding work our volunteers and paid first responders do every day to protect the health and safety of our community,” Town Supervisor Mike Cazzari said.
