Carmel to receive $100,000 for public safety projects

The Town of Carmel is among the municipalities in New York’s 40th Senate District set to receive a $100,000 grant for public safety projects. The grant was announced by Sen. Pete Harckham at a press conference with local leaders on July 30. In a subsequent press release, Harckham’s office said the funding—part of a $2.1 million Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability, and Technology (CREST) program for the district—“can be used at the discretion of local officials, whether it be equipment for first responders, emergency communications systems, infrastructure upgrades, or pedestrian safety.”

Harckham’s office said the senator has secured more than $40 million in capital grants for local governments and community organizations across his district through CREST, the Local Community Assistance Program (LOCAP) and State Aid to Municipalities (SAM) grants since 2019. More than $11 million has gone to first responders, Harckham’s office said.

“Our local officials face a number of competing challenges and priorities, which is why our partnerships with them are so vital,” Harckham said. “This funding shows that I am willing to work with all the communities and local leaders as they move forward with important projects that will benefit their communities.”

Town of Carmel Police Chief Anthony Hoffman thanked Harckham and said CREST funding helped the department acquire two vehicles, which will be used by CPD detectives and patrol officers in extreme risk protection order and domestic violence investigations, as well as the department’s “response and follow-up to persons in mental health crises.”

Hoffman said the grants showed “Harckham’s commitment to aiding the municipalities in his district with the vital, yet specialized tools to accomplish our mission, provide effective police services, and continue to keep our communities safe” while providing resources in “vital areas that we use to serve the Town of Carmel every day.”
