Carmel police have made a series of arrests in recent days involving a fugitive wanted in Florida, two men accused of identity theft and three workers who were charged with stealing building materials.

Florida fugitive arrested

At about 5:30 p.m. Feb. 27, a Carmel police officer conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle at Route 6N and Baldwin Place Road for multiple traffic violations.

During the investigation, the driver, Edward Hernandez, 46, of Clermont, Fla., who police said is currently residing in Mahopac, was found to be wanted on a warrant out of Lake County, Florida, for domestic violence strangulation.

Hernandez was taken into custody as a fugitive from justice, arraigned in Carmel Town Court and remanded to the Putnam County Jail pending extradition by Florida authorities.

Pair arrested for credit union ID theft

At about 4:40 p.m. on Feb. 25, Carmel police responded to Hudson Valley Credit Union on Route 6 after Putnam County 911 received a report of a man attempting to withdraw money using a possibly fraudulent driver’s license.

Patrol officers and detectives arrested Jordan Wright, 31, of Manhattan, and his accomplice, Derrick Sutton, 39, of White Plains.

Police charged the pair with identity theft, criminal possession of a forged instrument, attempted grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, all felonies.

Both defendants were arraigned in Carmel Town Court and released on their own recognizance. They are scheduled to return to court at a later date.

Three charged in construction site theft

On the evening of March 1, a Carmel police officer on patrol in the new Toll Brothers residential development on Route 6 observed a suspicious pickup truck loaded with building materials parked outside a home under construction.

An investigation determined that David Coraisaca Contreras, 31, of Ossining; Walter Tapia, 57, of Mahopac; and Hector Contreras Gomez, 32, of Ossining, were workers at the site but did not have permission to be on the premises after hours or to remove any property, police said.

With assistance from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, officers took the three men into custody. They were charged with grand larceny, a felony, and trespassing and issued appearance tickets directing them to return to Carmel Town Court at a later date.
