A Carmel man was arrested after deputies alleged he falsely reported a vehicle theft and was driving while intoxicated, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
Scott A. Endrulat, 35, of the town of Carmel, was taken into custody following an investigation late Jan. 4 in the town of Southeast.
Deputies responded at about 10:55 p.m. to the area of Carmel Avenue and Drewville Road after receiving a report of a vehicle theft in progress. The caller, later identified as Endrulat, told police that while he had pulled over to check on an injured deer, an unknown individual entered his vehicle and drove off.
The vehicle was later found crashed a short distance away.
“During the investigation, deputies were able to determine that the report of a stolen vehicle was false,” said Sheriff Brian Hess. “Mr. Endrulat admitted he had crashed his own vehicle and fabricated the story.”
Further investigation indicated Endrulat was intoxicated, according to the sheriff’s deputies. They said he failed standardized field sobriety tests and was taken into custody, then transported to the Putnam County Correctional Facility for processing.
“This type of false report diverts resources away from legitimate emergencies and puts the public at risk,” Hess said. “We take these incidents seriously, especially when alcohol is involved.”
Endrulat was charged with falsely reporting an incident in the third degree, a misdemeanor, driving while intoxicated, and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations.
Endrulat was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Southeast Town Court at a later date.
