PATTERSON, N.Y. - In the wake of a tense standoff in which officers from the Carmel Police Department assisted, a Patterson man now faces a litany of charges including felonious assault.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office arrested Nicholas Rodriguez,47, following a “tense barricade situation” on the evening of Oct. 16, at a condo complex in Patterson.

At approximately 5 p.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to the complex after receiving a report that a male subject, later identified as Rodriguez, dressed in full camouflage menaced a neighbor with what appeared to be a firearm. Upon arrival, deputies attempted to contact Rodriguez, who subsequently barricaded himself inside his home and made statements suggesting he was in possession of an explosive device.

The Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) and Hostage Negotiations Team responded to the scene to try and bring the situation to a safe resolution.

At around 9:30 p.m., Rodriguez was taken into custody. Shortly after he was secured, a fire was discovered inside the home. Investigators said it remains unclear whether the fire was accidental or intentionally set. The cause is under investigation.

Rodriguez was charged with second-degree assault, a class D felony, second-degree attempted assault, a class E felony, third-degree criminal mischief, a class E felony, and second-degree menacing, a class A misdemeanor.

Rodriguez was arraigned in Patterson Town Court and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.

“This was a dangerous and dynamic situation that required a disciplined and coordinated response,” acting Sheriff Brian Hess said. “I commend the professionalism and courage of all deputies and responding personnel who helped bring this incident to a safe conclusion.”

Hess said his department received assistance from the Kent Police Department, Carmel Police Department, Brewster Police Department, New York State Police, and the Patterson Fire Department.

The investigation remains active, and additional details will be released as they become available.
