A Massachusetts man wanted on theft charges in Delaware was taken into custody in Mahopac last week after Carmel Police said he gave officers a false name during a traffic stop.
Ronald R. Ramirez Rivas, 25, of Roxbury, Mass., was arrested Thursday, Sept. 10, following a stop on South Lake Boulevard, according to Carmel Police.
Police said Officer Vincent DeSantola of the department’s K-9 Unit was on patrol shortly after 11 a.m. when he spotted a Toyota sedan committing an equipment violation on South Lake Boulevard, also known as Route 6N. He stopped the vehicle near the intersection with Senior Avenue.
According to police, DeSantola determined that the driver did not have a license and had provided a false name. A Spanish-speaking Putnam County sheriff’s deputy was called to assist, and further investigation identified the driver as Ramirez Rivas.
A records check then showed that Ramirez Rivas was wanted on an active arrest warrant issued by Delaware State Police in connection with alleged theft offenses, police said. Delaware authorities confirmed the warrant and advised Carmel Police that they intended to extradite him.
Ramirez Rivas was taken into custody without incident and charged with false personation, a Class B misdemeanor, and being a fugitive from justice. He was also issued traffic summonses for the equipment violation and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
He was arraigned in Carmel Town Justice Court and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility pending extradition proceedings. The vehicle was impounded.
Carmel Police were assisted by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and investigators assigned to the FBI Safe Streets Task Force.
