The search for a 73-year-old Mahopac man who disappeared while traveling in the Adirondacks has entered its second month, with authorities reporting that search crews have covered more than 2,500 acres looking for him.
Craig K. Streeter was last seen Aug. 2 at a Stewart’s Shop in Indian Lake in Hamilton County and has not been heard from since, according to New York State Police.
In an update released Wednesday, Sept. 2, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said forest rangers have spent the past two and a half weeks working with dozens of personnel from other agencies, including State Police, searching for Streeter in the Moose River Plains area.
Since Aug. 17, search crews have covered more than 728 linear miles and 2,514 acres, according to DEC.
The search began after rangers discovered Streeter’s recreational vehicle at campsite 36 on Moose River Road in the town of Inlet, according to an Aug. 19 State Police release.
State Police said they were notified Aug. 17 of a possible missing person after the RV was found with no known activity around it. An investigation determined that the vehicle belonged to Streeter, who police said is known to travel and camp in remote areas.
After forest rangers were unable to locate Streeter, additional law enforcement agencies were called in to assist, according to State Police.
Police subsequently determined that Streeter had last been seen Aug. 2 at the Stewart’s Shop in Indian Lake. He was wearing a dark-colored long-sleeve shirt and jeans and left the store in his RV. Police said Aug. 2 was also the last time anyone was known to have heard from him.
State Police said Streeter’s frequent travel to remote camping areas meant it was not unusual for him to be out of contact for periods of time.
State Police said there were no indications of foul play.
The DEC stated that the search has continued on a large scale despite the passage of more than a month since Streeter was last seen.
Anyone who may have seen Streeter—particularly anyone who was camping or traveling along Moose River Road or in nearby remote camping areas—or who has information about his whereabouts is asked to contact New York State Police at 518-897-2000.
