KATONAH, N.Y. - Harvey's fall athletic program enjoyed a "Super Saturday of Sports" on Nov. 9 when all five teams -- boys and girls soccer, volleyball, football, and cross country -- entered the day vying for a league championship. The excitement around campus was palpable as students and staff were thrilled at the possibility of history being made with a clean sweep for Harvey athletes in their championship games. When the dust settled in the late afternoon, two Harvey teams -- boys soccer and football -- came out on top with championship trophies. The three others gave it all they had and earned the title of runner-up to cap off their marvelous run for a championship.
HVAL Soccer Champions
After having lost to Wooster in three consecutive championship games and having suffered two regular season losses to the Generals this year, Harvey’s boys soccer team pulled off a thrilling 3-2 overtime upset victory in the HVAL title match Saturday, Nov. 9. It was fitting that Harvey’s top two offensive players, senior captain Jonah Kass of Katonah and junior Patrick Muns, teamed up to get the game-winning goal eight minutes into the overtime period. The game-winner came when Muns booted a cross shot toward the goal and Kass was there to head it in.
The Cavs got their first goal on a great counterattack started by junior Evan Vasile of Yorktown Heights. Muns took control of the ball and passed it to Kass who put Harvey on the board. The Cavs’ second goal was a penalty kick from junior Jordan Collins. Kass drew the penalty.
With Harvey leading 2-0 with six minutes left in the game, the Generals scored two unanswered goals to force a tie. Both Wooster goals came in the last six minutes off corner kicks, which eventually forced the game into overtime when the Kass-Muns tandem combined to give the Cavs the thrilling win.
Throughout the match Harvey’s defense stepped up big time. Cavs’ defenders Vasile and sophomore Jake Acosta double-teamed Wooster’s top scoring threat and sophomore goalie Alvaro Churruca played superbly in front of the net, making 13 saves, five of them tough one-on-ones.
Asked to describe his feelings about seeing his team crowned HVAL champions after three years being relegated as the runner-up, Harvey coach Alex Morse used just one word: “elation.” He went on to say, “I’m so proud of our team and so very happy for the seniors.”
With their HVAL championship, the Cavaliers earned a bid to play in the highly competitive NEPSAC Class D Championship Tournament that got underway Wednesday, Nov. 13.
Football Captures League Crown
The Harvey football team is the champion of the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) 8-Man League. The Cavaliers capped off a stellar 2024 fall season Saturday, Nov. 9, with an impressive 38-20 victory on the road in Pomfret, Connecticut, against Hebron Academy to finish 6-1 and claim the league title.
Leading the way for Harvey were two of the stalwarts of their powerful offense. Quarterback Jackson Saccomanno and senior running back Will Bland. The senior QB finished his season on a high note, going 13 for 25 in passing for 159 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 87 yards on 12 carries and with a TD on the ground. Bland caught six passes for 100 yards and scored three TDs. He also ran 14 times for 57 yards and a TD.
Meanwhile, two standouts on defense were senior defensive lineman Luca Marano of Bedford and junior linebacker Wyatt Bland. Each recorded 12 tackles.
In addition to the boys soccer team, the girls soccer and volleyball teams won invitations to play in the New England prep school championship tournaments.
