YORKTOWN, N.Y. —Dance will always be more than just a hobby for Yorktown High School senior Anna Horlacher. It’s a passion that goes far beyond the studio or stage. Whether she’s dancing with the YHS Dance Company or competing with The Hive Dance Center, she says it will always be a part of her life. We caught up with Horlacher in January, and she shared more about her love for the art.
When did you start dancing?
When I was around 4 years old, my mom put me into my first ballet class. I picked up dancing again when I was in fourth grade, but I started to be serious about dance and compete at dance competitions in sixth grade.
Do you plan to continue performing after high school?
I do not know exactly what I want to do after high school, but I definitely want to continue dancing in college. I want to either be on a dance team or just take classes and join dance clubs. Dance has always been an important part of my life, and I can’t imagine a life without it.
Who inspires you?
I would say that my biggest inspiration is my mom. Throughout my entire life, she has been helping me figure out who I am and supporting me in everything that I do. She has always been my biggest supporter and is always my biggest cheerleader at all of my shows and competitions.
My advisors Mr. Justin [Wingenroth] and Ms. [Nicole] Tolli have also been an inspiration to me throughout my four years in Dance Company. When I started Dance Company, I never would have thought that I would have such an important leadership role. Mr. Justin and Ms. Tolli have helped me discover my true potential as not only a dancer but also as a leader.
What is it about dance that you love?
To me, Dance Company has always been about way more than just dancing. I have met some of my best friends through Dance Company and I have been able to connect with so many more people who I would not have without this company. It is more than just a club to all of us. No matter how much hard work and long hours we have put into our show, we always end up having the best time with each other and have created memories that I will never forget. We have so many traditions that make every year so special. Our dance parties in the cafeteria, watching the video montage with each other in the auditorium, and the paper plate awards are my personal favorite traditions. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that nobody in this company will ever forget our memories from this time.
What do you do in your free time?
In my free time I enjoy spending time with my friends and dancing at The Hive Dance Center. I spend most of my time at the studio practicing for competitions and recitals. I also love spending time with my family and my cousins. When I am not dancing myself, I usually am teaching little dancers. I love helping the younger kids at my studio discover their passion for dance.
