One of the staples of the summer, the Hudson Valley Summer Field Hockey League, which holds its games at Lakeland High School, began its 26th season on Wednesday.
In varsity-division action, Lakeland Green (1-0) blanked Putnam Valley 10-0, led by Gianna Santini (5G), Gabby Goldstein (2G), Kendal Williams (2G), Brielle Fertucci (1G), and Olivia O’Connor (1 save).
“We were able to play as well as we did because everyone came prepared and worked together from start to finish,” Santini said. “We stayed focused, communicated well, and took advantage of our opportunities.”
Santini credited her personal success to the team.
“As for the 5 goals, my teammates put me in great positions to score, and I was able to finish the chances they created,” Santini said. “I was super proud of our team that night.”
Lakeland Gold earned a 2-2 tie against RGV, with Goldstein (2G) and O’Connor (8 saves) producing for the Gold.
Yorktown (0-0-1) knotted John Jay-East Fishkill 2-2, paced by Megan Durante (1G), Alana D’Andraia (1G), and Sam Conboy (8 saves).
“I felt like our team played amazing against John Jay-East Fishkill especially coming out not having played with each other for a while, we were able to pick it back up very quickly which shows our team’s strong connection,” Durante said. “I am excited to see our team’s chemistry continue to build over the summer and into the fall season.”
Playing in the summer is vital, according to Durante.
“It is so important to play in the summer because it gives us the opportunity to improve together before the fall season,” Durante said. “Keeping our sticks in our hands is super helpful in building our skill so that we are ready for the upcoming season.”
Hornets 2 JV played Putnam Valley JV to a 2-2 standstill in the JV/Modified division, led by Caitlin Gallagher (1G), Bridget O’Connor (1G), and Olivia Vitale (1 save).
Rye JV defeated Yorktown JV 4-0 with Gillian Ropke making three saves for the Huskers (0-1).
The next day Lakeland Gold (1-0-1) won against John Jay-Cross River 10-2, with Goldstein (6G), Gianna Santini (2G), Meaghan Heyde (1G), Nikki Santini (1G), and Olivia O’Connor (6 saves) leading the Gold.
Sofia Pikoulas (2G), Ava Canniff (2G), Selena Vazquez (1G), Bridget O'Connor (1G), Roamy Vasquez (1G), Zoey Delgardo (1G), Gallagher (1G), Leah Kuney (1G), and Vitale (2 saves) propelled Hornets 1 JV (1-0) to a 10-1 victory against Mahopac JV.
Hornets 2 JV (0-1-1) fell to John Jay-Cross River Black JV 10-0, with Vitale making three saves.
Callan Keeley (2G), Riley Waters (1G), Gianna Santini (1G), Heyde (1G), Aditi Parambath (1G), Natalya Walther (6 saves), and Olivia O’Connor (3 saves) paced Hudson Valley (1-0) in its 6-1 open-division victory against the Grays (0-1).
Samantha Searling (1G) and Jenna Yazzetti (13 saves) produced for the Grays.
In another open-division contest, Sticks and Giggles (1-0) won against The Goats 5-1, led by Charlotte Sabert (2G), Gabby Santini (2G), Emma Numme (1G), and Celeste Pagliaroli (4 saves).
Hope Angiotti (1G) and Aurelia Mendez (7 saves) paced The Goats (0-1).
