Emigdio Matos, age 87, passed away peacefully on January 17. He was born in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. He later made his home in the Bronx and ultimately in Westchester, NY, where he built a life centered around hard work, diligent organization, and family.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian, whom he adored more than words could say; his children, Rosanna and Walter; his son-in-law, David; his daughter-in-law, Lucy; and his grandchildren, Alexandria, Ezra, Gabrielle, her partner Jared, and Amanda.
He will be remembered for his love of records and musical artists like Hector Lavoe, Willie Colón, and El Gran Combo; his affinity for westerns and action films; and his phenomenal collection of superhero and graphic tees. He wasn’t a regular grandpa — he was a cool abuelo. After retiring from his career as a pawn shop clerk in NYC, he began a new undertaking as a bowling and soccer supporter, becoming affectionately known as Abuelo or Papi by those at the lanes and on the sidelines.
