YORKTOWN, N.Y.—Lakeland and Yorktown varsity teams were busy last week, seeing action on the hardwood, ice, mat, and lanes.
LAKELAND GIRLS BASKETBALL (5-5)
Lakeland 40, Somers 33
Thursday, Jan. 16, Lakeland High School
Riley Waters (18 points), Liliana Aguire (8 points), Sarah Devane (6 points), Emma Burke (3 points), Allie Waters (3 points), and Amanda Franco (2 points) did the job for the Hornets in their 40-33 triumph against Somers.
Lakeland earned the win by outscoring the Tuskers 15-8 in the final quarter.
“After the third quarter, coach (Mike) Auerbach told us we needed a lot more energy,” Riley Waters said. “Everyone did their part and understood what they needed to do for us to be successful and to get the win. It honestly felt great to beat a team in our league, especially when it was a tough game and a good opponent.”
YORKTOWN GIRLS BASKETBALL (5-3)

Monday, Jan. 13, Poughkeepsie High School
Sofia Boucher scored 11 of her 20 points in the second quarter to lead Yorktown to a 65-54 triumph against Poughkeepsie.
“We have been working really hard in practice,” Boucher said. “Coach Kristi (Dini) has drawn up some great plays to create open looks in our sets. My teammates were giving me great opportunities with the ball and I was able to finish. I’ve been working a lot on my shot recently so it felt great to have that translate to the game.”

Boucher and Sophia Morello both had 11 points, while Ava Costello contributed 6 assists, in leading Yorktown to a 43-30 victory against Clarkstown North.

Friday, Jan. 17, Brewster High School
An energetic Yorktown squad won its third in row, by overcoming a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to rally for a 49-44 victory in overtime against Brewster, paced by 23 points from Morello.

Wednesday, Jan. 15, Carmel High School
Kaden Gonzalez (25 points 6 rebounds), Colin Worden (12 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists), and Franklin Ringel (11 points, 5 rebounds) propelled Yorktown to a 63-56 triumph against Carmel.

Yorktown defeated North Warren 68-56, led by Gonzalez (27 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists), David Marasevic (13 points, 3 rebounds) and
Ethan Bantug (7 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist).
“It meant a lot beating them to end the weekend well,” Gonzalez said. “This trip we learned a lot about each other, not only on the floor but off the floor. The bonding is something else and is something that was definitely needed.”

Lakeland/Panas wrestled against Putnam Valley and White Plains in a multi-meet where no team scores were kept.
Nate Horowitz, Enzo Maraglino, Matt Travis, Carlos M. Pagan, Dylan Riekert, Jerry Ku, Bryce Whippo, Aaron Federoff, David Tomala, Matteo Monteleone, Jeremy Bolanos, Ayden Olmeda, Brandon Munoz, and Lorenzo Battista all won matches for the Rebels, who were 24-17 on the day.

Hurley (285) took first place at the Eric D’Agnese Memorial Tournament.
“After placing second last week at Hen Hud, winning the Somers Tournament feels great,” Hurley said. “What won me the tournament today was keeping my opponents on the mat. My top work has improved significantly from last season, which helped me beat another great wrestler, Mason Dietz, to win the final.”
Dan Horowitz (116, fourth), Sommovigo (138, sixth), Clyman (152, fifth), Zach Morey (170, fifth), and Joey DeSantis (190, sixth) also placed for the Rebels, which finished eighth as a team.

“Winning three matches as a team and individually on senior night means a lot,” Muscolino said. “It is a reflection of all the hard work, dedication and growth we have put in this season. As a team, it shows our ability to rise to the occasion. Individually, it was a memorable night and a great way to show how my challenges and triumphs have led me to the wrestler I have become. It’s not just about the victories but celebrating the journey and the support systems that made it possible.

BYSNS (Brewster/Yorktown/Somers/North Salem) defeated New Rochelle 8-5, paced by AJ Jones (2G, 3A), Lucas Salvatore (3G, 1A), Michael Bonelli (3G, 1A), James Munoz (2A), Jack Leavy (1A), Danny Luis (1A), and Patrick Vaughn (13 saves).
The win avenged a 4-2 loss at New Rochelle on Jan. 11.
“We felt confident in how we played against them the first time,” said BYSNS coach Ryan Langkafel. “We were unfortunate to not pull away with the win then, so we were determined to avenge that loss on home ice. We didn’t concede a goal in the third period and that’s due to the determination to execute the game plan which our players did tremendously.”

“It (to win) felt good,” Larsen said. “In the past Lakeland has given us good competition and they beat us last year, so it felt good to finally be able to beat them.”

“Our wins against Yorktown and Panas was proof of our growth and commitment this season,” Pike said. “I was incredibly proud seeing all the improvement and the success in my teammates, and I hope to finish the season as strong as we have been playing.”
