League 1D Championships

Tuesday, Feb. 11, Nike Track and Field Center at the Armory, New York City

Lakeland/Panas’ girls squad took first place at the League 1D championships, which also included Fox Lane, Horace Greeley (boys champion), Yorktown, Ossining, Port Chester, and White Plains. 

“It was an amazingly long day for the athletes,” said Lakeland/Panas coach AnnMarie Reilly. “We didn’t leave the Armory till 11:15 p.m.

Every single athlete stepped up and this marks our fourth straight league championship for the winter season. I’m beyond proud of the team’s hard work and dedication.”

Sophomore Riley Scott placed second in the 55-meter dash (7.71 seconds), third in the 300-meter dash (44.26), and was on the second place 4x200-meter relay (1:52.02). 

Senior Lily Day finished first in the 600-meter run (1:40.89), second in the 1,500-meter run (5:16.79) and was on the winning 4x800-meter relay (10:40.32) while sophomore Margaret Keating placed second in the 3,000-meter run (11:50.59) and was also on the winning 4x800-meter relay. 

Freshman Eden Picardi placed first in the 1,500-meter race walk (9:25.86) while senior Emily Healy finished second in the 1,500-meter race walk (9:59.59) and third in the pole vault (6-feet).

Senior Alana Myke placed second in the shot put (27-00.75), tied for second in the high jump (4-08), and finished first in the triple jump (32-05.25). 

Senior Layla Collazo tied for second in the high jump (4-08), was on the second place 4x200-meter relay, and second place 4x400-meter relay (4:34.46). Freshman Mia Aquart was second in triple jump (30-11).

Hannah Arbid placed first in the weight throw (43-04.25) and fourth in the shot put (24-09.50) while freshman Aaliyah Thomas placed second in the 600-meter run (1:43.88) and was on the winning 4x800 relay. 

“I couldn’t be more proud of my team,” Reilly said. “We’ve worked so hard all season, and seeing that effort pay off with a first-place finish in the league championship is incredible. The performance was nothing short of amazing, and I’m beyond thrilled with how each athlete stepped up when it mattered most. This victory is a testament to the dedication, teamwork, and passion that everyone put in. We earned it.”

For the Rebel boys squad, sophomore William Pike placed second in the 1,600-meter run (4:40.07) and junior Gianni Simpson placed fourth in the long jump (20-07.50) and third in the 300-meter dash (37.07), just ahead of senior Trent Patane (fourth, 37.22). 

Junior Nischal Grabe was second in the 1,000-meter run (2:45.69) and senior Carter Dawson placed second in the shot put (40-10.75), with the 4x400-meter relay of Gianni Simpson, sophomore Giovanni Simpson, Bryant Gallagher, and Patane finishing first (3:34.79).   

Section 1 Class AA Championships 

Sunday, Feb. 16, Nike Track and Field Center at the Armory, New York City

Lakeland/Panas’ boys and girls squads both finished seventh at the Section 1 Class AA championships. 

On the girls side, Arbid and Bianca Graham, both seniors, finished third and fifth in the weight throw respectively while Scott placed sixth in the 300-meter run. 

Day finished second in the 1,500-meter run, Picardi was eighth in the 1,500-meter race walk, and Collazo seventh in the high jump.  

Healy placed fifth in the pole vault and Myke ninth in both the high jump and triple jump. The 4x200-meter relay of Scott, Collazo, freshman Zoe Waugh, and sophomore Ondine Gourdon-Luckenbill finished sixth. 

For the boys, Dawson finished sixth in the shot put, Grabe fifth in the 1,000-meter run, and Gianni Simpson second in the long jump. The 4x400-meter relay of  Patane, Gianni Simpson, sophomore Giovanni Simpson, and Grabe was third.  

The 4x800-meter relay of senior Kaare Numme, Pike, sophomore Quinn Patane, and freshman Ian Mejia placed sixth. 

"For the indoor season, despite dealing with bad weather for a large portion of it, both teams had a fantastic season,” said Lakeland/Panas coach John Benvin.  “The girls repeated as league champs and despite the youth of the team fared well against the AA stalwarts of North Rockland, New Rochelle, etc. The boys are rebuilding and have shown tenacity and determination all year long and it showed at sectionals. With state qualifiers next week, hopefully, we have an athlete or two at states in early March, and the indoor nationals weekend in mid-March. The team portion is over as the individuals who qualify get to continue to compete."

YORKTOWN TRACK AND FIELD

League 1D Championships

Tuesday, Feb. 11, Nike Track and Field Center at the Armory, New York City

Yorktown’s boys and girls both placed third at the League 1D championships. 

Earning 88 points was the Yorktown boys squad, with first-place finishes from Brian White (55-meter dash, 6.57, 55-meter hurdles, 8.31), Marcello Silvestro (600-meter run, 1:26.30), and Gabriel Iavarone (high jump, 5-foot-10). 

Earning third-place finishes were John Tyndal (55-meter hurdles, 8.92), Sagar GC (high jump, 5-6), Nicholas Erickson (triple jump, 38-3.5), and Jack Shaw (weight throw, 41-11.25). 

The 1,600-meter relay of White, Silvestro, George Ringel, and Xavier Guzman also placed third (3:39.13).

Yorktown’s girls tallied 90 points, led by first-place finishes from Makayla Winslow (55-meter hurdles, 9.88) and Jane Hanson (shot put, 30-6.5). Isabella Bevilacqua (300-meter dash, 43.03), Isabelle Ngambo (long jump, 14-5.75) and Hanson (weight throw, 40-4) all recorded second-place finishes.  

Bevilacqua (55-meter dash, 7.77), Sophia Luo (55-meter hurdles, 10. 47, triple jump, 29-6.6), and Hannah McCann (1,500-meter race walk, 10:03.86) placed third. 

“I was pleased how we performed at the league championships,” said Yorktown coach Keith Smith. “Our seniors really came through with Makayla, Jane, Gabriel, Marcello, and Brian all earning All-League honors at their final indoor league championship. Next up is the Class A Sectionals and the team is really looking forward to that.”

Section 1 Class A Championships 

Sunday, Feb. 16, Nike Track and Field Center at the Armory, New York City

Yorktown’s boys squad tied for third with 50 points at the Section 1 Class A championships. 

White finished in first placed in both the 55-meter dash (6.57) and 55-meter hurdles (8.31), with Silvestro (600-meter run, 1:26.40), GC (high jump, 5-8), and the 1,600-meter relay (3:39.65) of Ringel, Silvestro, Guzman, and White finishing second. 

The Husker girls earned 48 points for a fifth-place standing, led by Peyton Case (first place, high jump, 4-8), Hanson (second place, weight throw, 41-1), and third-place finishers Ngambo (long jump, 14-0.75), Mayar Nassar (1,500-meter walk, 10:21.69), and Hanson (shot put, 30-4.75). 

“The team did very well, despite being decimated by the flu that is going around,” Smith said. “We were missing many of our top athletes, but the rest of the team stepped up and did a great job. Brian White continued his strong season in the dash and the hurdles, winning both. Peyton Case tied her personal best to win the high jump and Jane Hanson continue her strong performances in the shot put and weight throw.”

LAKELAND BOYS BASKETBALL (10-9, 5-1)

Clarkstown South 55, Lakeland 38

Monday, Feb. 10, Clarkstown South High School

Senior captains Oban Rader (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Anthony Attanasio (7 points) led Lakeland in its 55-38 loss to Clarkstown South. 

Lakeland 59, John Jay-CR 34

Thursday, Feb. 13, Lakeland High School

Rader (24 points, 10 rebounds) ignited the Hornets to a 59-34 triumph against John Jay-Cross River, enabling them to earn a share of the League II-D title with the visitors. 

“We remembered the last game we played against them and it didn’t go as we wanted,” Rader said. “Knowing with a win we could clinch a share of the league title, we came out with a lot of energy. After having a big first quarter, we knew it was our game and that we couldn’t let up, which allowed us to play a complete game. Everyone did their job and played as a team, which was great. It always feels amazing to put another league title on the banner in our gym.” 

Attanasio also played a big role in the win, by scoring 16 points.

“We dominated tonight because we were more aggressive and we were in control of the game from the jump, it’s near postseason so now we’re just letting the tank out and giving out our all,” Attanasio said. 

Aaryn Sandu, Nick Ferrante (captain), Sergio Hormazabal, CC Savastano, Anthony D’Errico, Joe Lapuerta, Luke Lulanaj, Aadi Sandhu, Anthony Ray, Mike Lucia, Shawn Sullivan (head coach), and Will Fallo (assistant coach) also make up the Hornets’ league championship squad. 

“It obviously feels good to accomplish something as a team, because we all work so hard and push each other, so it’s a good accomplishment,” Attanasio said of earning a share of the league crown.”

LAKELAND GIRLS BASKETBALL (9-11)

Fox Lane 56, Lakeland 42

Tuesday, Feb. 11, Lakeland High School 

Riley Waters (18 points), Sarah Devane (13 points), Liliana Aguirre (6 points), Carina Cannizzaro (3 points), and Amanda Franco (2 points) led Lakeland in its 56-42 senior-night loss to Fox Lane. 

Devane and Franco were the seniors that were honored. 

John Jay-CR 38, Lakeland 35

Thursday, Feb. 13, John Jay-CR High School

Waters (15 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals), Aguirre (11 points, 7 rebounds), Franco (4 points), Cannizzaro (3 points), and Emily Hahn (2 points) scored for Lakeland in its 38-35 loss to John Jay-Cross River. 

YORKTOWN GIRLS BASKETBALL (12-8)

Yorktown 43, White Plains 29

Monday, Feb. 10, White Plains High School

Ava Costello (22 points), Addison Schluter (10 points), Sofia Boucher (6 points), Ava Ryan (3 points), and Kiera Mooney (2 points) propelled Yorktown to a 43-29 victory against White Plains. 

Yorktown 38, Brewster 37 (OT)

Wednesday, Feb. 12, Yorktown High School

Schluter hit a close-range shot that went off the glass and in with .3 seconds remaining in overtime, giving Yorktown a thrilling 38-37 triumph against Brewster. 

“My teammate Reilly Acosta shot a 3-pointer and I knew if Reilly missed I had to do whatever I could to get this rebound and put it right back up within a split second,” said Schluter, a freshman who led YHS with 13 points. “The feeling of this shot goes beyond words. At first, I stared at the scoreboard waiting for the points to change. Once the score changed, I was so excited we won, and couldn’t wait to celebrate with my coaches and teammates.”

Boucher (12 points, four 3-pointers), Costello (6 points), Mooney (5 points), and Ryan (2 points) also scored for Yorktown. 

“It was a huge win for us,” Boucher said. 

John Jay-EF 50, Yorktown 26

Friday, Feb. 14, John Jay-EF High School 

Yorktown fell 50-26 to John Jay-East Fishkill, with Boucher (12 points), Costello (9 points), Schluter (4 points), and Mooney (1 point), leading the Huskers. 

Mahopac 59, Yorktown 53 (OT)

Saturday, Feb. 15, Mahopac High School

Costello (13 points), Sophia Morello (13 points), Boucher (13 points), Acosta (6 points), Mooney (5 points), and Schluter (3 points) produced for Yorktown in its 59-53 overtime loss to Mahopac. 

BYSNS ICE HOCKEY (11-9)

BYSNS 10, Mahopac 7

Monday, Feb. 10, Brewster Ice Arena

BYSNS (Brewster/Yorktown/Somers/North Salem) overcame rival Mahopac 10-7, paced by Lucas Salvatore (6G, 2A), AJ Jones (3G, 2A), Jordan Millar (1G, 1A), Michael Bonelli (2A), Ryan Dean (2A), Kaden Kempler (1A), Jake Leavy (1A), and Patrick Vaughn (24 saves). 

“We were focused on playing one period at a time,” said BYSNS coach Ryan Langkafel. “We had big-time performances from AJ Jones and Lucas Salvatore. The rest of the team was determined to battle and kept controlling the game, one shift at a time.”

Rivertowns 10, BYSNS 3

Tuesday, Feb. 11, Westchester Skating Academy

The BYSNS fell to Rivertowns 10-3, led by Salvatore (3G), Jones (2A), Bonelli (1A), and Vaughn (34 saves). 

CORTLANDT ICE HOCKEY (3-16)

Byram Hills 10, Cortlandt 4

Friday, Feb. 14, Brewster Ice Arena

Dylan Marthaler (2A), Jake Di Benedetto (1G), Giovanni Cobelli (1G), Hudson Tarkington (1G), Vincent Ofrias (1G), John Gannon (1A), Nate Garofalo (1A), Nate Herbert (1A), Brandon Di Benedetto (14 saves), and Sean Mansfield (14 saves) paced the Rebels in their 10-4 setback against Byram Hills. 

Cortlandt 6, Greeley 4

Sunday, Feb. 16, Brewster Ice Arena 

Garofalo (1G, 4A), Jake Di Benedetto (2G, 2A), Gannon (1G, 2A), Aidan Dzubak (2G), and Mansfield (10 saves) helped keep the Rebels’ playoff hopes alive with a 6-4 victory against Horace Greeley. 

“The kids played a heck of a game tonight,” said proud Rebels’ coach Bart Mucci. 

YORKTOWN BOYS BOWLING (68-9)

Tuesday, Feb. 11, Fishkill Bowl

Yorktown’s Kevin Kirey (198, 980), Dylan Katz (197, 912), Kyle Cavalieri (156, 862), and Gian Monegro (161, 752) competed at the Section 1 championships.
