Individually, nine Yorktown grapplers earned a top four finish to qualify for the Section 1 Division 1 Tournament, which is also scheduled to take place at the County Center on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and Wednesday, Feb. 12.

“It means a lot to win the team title because I know how hard we have all been working as a team and I feel this is just one step closer to showing everyone how good Yorktown wrestling is,” Muscolino, a senior captain, said.
The divisional tournament wasn’t the only wrestling during the weekend that Muscolino took part in, as he also volunteered at the Yorktown Youth Wrestling Super Bowl Warzone event at French Hill Elementary School the following day.
“It is important for me to volunteer because it is important to give back to the wrestling community, that has given so much to me,” Muscolino said.
LAKELAND/PANAS WRESTLING (13-7)
Division A Divisional Tournament
Saturday, Feb. 8, Westchester County Center, White Plains
Lakeland/Panas earned a fourth-place finish in the Division A Tournament, accumulating 117 points.
The Rebels will send six of their grapplers to sectionals, including freshman Dan Horowitz, who was the Division A Tournament champion at 116 pounds.
“To win the 116-pound weight class was really special because there were a lot of great wrestlers,” Horowitz said. “I fell short the last two years, placing third two years ago and second last year. To finally win a divisional title shows I’m improving. It was a really great experience, and to win in an environment like the County Center was also really cool.”
Horowitz said he was able to place first by just staying in the right mindset all day.
“The mindset gets reinforced every day at practice by my teammates and coach (Dave) Bergen,” Horowitz said. “Coach puts us through hard practices to prepare us for tournaments like this. He focuses on us staying checked-in on these long days against really good competition. I was down 3-0 in my semi-final and finals matches and was able to stay focused and come back because of it.”
Dan Hurley (285, second), Bryan DePascale (131, second), Matt Clyman (145, third), Nate Horowitz (101, third), and Joey DeSantis (190, fourth) earned trips to the sectionals as well.

“What enabled our team (to win) is the chase to make it into the playoffs,” Di Benedetto said. “We have a lot of seniors who may be done with hockey after this season. John Gannon, Nate Garofalo, and I really took that to heart, that we need to win out the rest of the season to make it. We went down a goal the last two minutes and if it wasn’t for the confidence of the three of us and the desire to win maybe it would have been a different outcome.”
Mansfield (30 saves) and Brandon Di Benedetto (3 saves) produced in goal for Cortlandt.
“Sean Mansfield also played a stellar game,” Di Benedetto, who scored to tie the game at 5-5, said. “He is another senior who understands the importance of us winning out the rest of the year and making it deep into the playoffs.”

“We knew beforehand tonight was a must win game, and the boys stood tall and played a great game,” Mansfield said. "John Gannon played a great game with 2 goals, one being the game winner. Jake Di Benedetto also played an amazing game with 2 goals and an assist. My defense played amazing and helped me to make 30 saves. It felt great to win as we make our way into playoff contention.”
