Yorktown to install six EV chargers at Hart Library

SHRUB OAK, N.Y.—The Yorktown Town Board unanimously approved a Westchester County grant to install six electric vehicle charging stations at the John C. Hart Memorial Library.

Following concerns from some Shrub Oak residents and a Mohegan Lake fire commissioner, the chargers — originally planned near the road — will now be moved further back in the parking lot. The relocation will require additional engineering work. The town will cover up to $15,000 of the $30,000 added cost, with the county funding the remainder.

Shrub Oak resident Brian Dee spoke during the public comment period at the Oct. 7 meeting, saying he supports the chargers but worries about their initial location.

“They’re going to put them in six spaces right at the edge of East Main Street,” he said, noting that one of the only old-school parts of Yorktown left would be punctuated by the “modern” look of the chargers.

Dee, who also serves as fire commissioner for the Lake Mohegan Fire District, later emphasized that the relocation is justified for safety. He noted that a fire at the original site could close all of East Main Street, making the additional expense worthwhile to protect residents.

Councilwoman Luciana Haughwout agreed with Dee’s points, and said, “I don’t want to take a walk and see a box.” She added that she likes the aesthetics of the front view of the library as is.

Councilwoman Susan Siegel asked whether the engineers would consult with the town to ensure it knows exactly where the chargers will be placed once relocated.

The installation is likely to begin this week and is expected to be completed by the end of October.
