Yorktown to commemorate Oct. 7

The Town of Yorktown will host a commemorative event Sunday, Oct. 5, marking two years since the Hamas-led terror attack in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

The town is inviting community members to remember and stand in unity at the gathering, scheduled for 6 p.m. at Town Hall.

The event follows a Sept. 29 memorial that featured remarks by Oriya Ness Berlin, a survivor of the Re’im Base attack, and Yoni Asayag, an American lone soldier, along with local leaders. The memorial drew strong emotions as groups on both sides of the conflict expressed collective grief over years of war.

Speakers on Sunday will include Supervisor Ed Lachterman, Chabad of Yorktown Rabbi Yehuda Heber, Calvary Bible Church Pastor Daniel O’Brien, and possibly other community members, with further details still being finalized.

"While the war is still ongoing, and hostages are still in captivity, it's important for people to remember how it started, and the need to get rid of evil so it doesn't happen again," Heber told Yorktown News.  "The event is also a show of support for Israel and the Jewish people, who were targeted on Oct 7, and ever since. Including many antisemitic attacks. It's a time to condemn this hatred, and not let it be tolerated."
