Five Yorktown High School seniors — Saarth Desai, Benjamin Smith, Zoe Yau, Ryan Zheng, Charlie Zhong — have been named semifinalists in the 72nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced more than 16,000 semifinalists nationwide. The students will compete for approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth about $24 million, which will be awarded next spring.
About 95 percent of semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level, with approximately half of the finalists receiving scholarships and earning the title of National Merit Scholar.
