Yorktown’s Susan Berliner is back with the second children’s picture book in her “Windsoar the Flying Car” series.
“Windsoar the Flying Car: The Island” follows Emma and Liam, who spot the yellow car flying through the sky and ask their neighbor, retired pilot Captain Shaw, to take them for another ride.
During their flight, they see geese circling a small island. When Captain Shaw lands, they hear honking and discover one of the geese has a plastic bottle caught around its neck.
“That’s what happens when people toss plastic bottles and other trash into lakes and oceans,” Captain Shaw tells the children. After they remove the bottle, the captain says he will take the plastic with them and put it in a recycling bin “where it belongs.”
The book, intended for children ages 2 to 7, incorporates lessons about recycling, caring for the environment and helping others while encouraging young readers to use their imaginations.
“I want kids to use their imagination. My Windsoar idea came from a dream I had,” Berliner said. “That's still the basis for this book, and I'm still dedicating them to children with the hope that they use their dreams to create new stories, because you want children to use their imagination and to come up with ideas and to write stories. When I was a little girl, that's what I did.”
Berliner, who lives in Yorktown Heights, is also the author of seven supernatural thrillers, three short story collections and a memoir. She has worked as a newspaper reporter, editor, promotion manager, nonfiction writer and teacher.
