John Jay-EF 3, Yorktown 2

Tuesday, Sept. 8, John Jay-East Fishkill High School

Yorktown, the defending Section 1 Class AA champion, started its season with a 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-22, 5-15) loss to John Jay-East Fishkill, led by Sophia Delgado (9 digs, 2 aces, 7 assists), Mia Horn (6 digs, 8 kills, 1 block, 4 aces), Angelina Piechucki (7 digs, 5 kills, 1 block), Nina Fasce (4 digs, 3 aces, 23 assists), Emma McCoy (15 digs, 12 kills, 1 block, 5 aces, 1 assist), and Kailey Alexander (1 dig, 8 kills, 2 blocks, 1 assist).

Somers 3, Yorktown 2

Thursday, Sept. 10, Somers High School

McCoy recorded a triple double (11 digs, 18 kills, 10 aces), to go along with 3 blocks and 2 assists, in the Huskers’ 3-2 (19-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-10, 13-15) loss to Somers.

“I really enjoy playing against good competition, it keeps me on my feet and wanting the ball more,” McCoy said. “Staying aggressive and relentless on the court is always my number one goal through any game. Additionally, our team has a lot of passion so when we’re up against good opponents everything really comes together nicely.”

One particular stretch where McCoy stood out was in set four, where she served 15 times in a row, including 10 aces, in the Huskers’ 25-10 win in that set.

“My freshman year, I was mainly focused on attacking up at the net,” McCoy said. “This year, I really wanted to expand my skill set and wanted to really show up at the service line. Something I really value in the game is resetting. Taking a deep, long breath and placing the serve with intention every single time is very important to me. I also believe that serving runs are a great contribution to not only the team’s point advantage, but also the energy on the court. It became a different level once we gained momentum.”

Delgado (15 digs, 6 aces, 9 assists), Horn (10 digs, 6 kills, 1 block), and Fasce (10 digs, 2 aces, 17 assists) also produced for Yorktown.

Lakeland 1, Pearl River 0

Monday, Sept. 7, Lakeland High School

Lakeland’s Christian Moscati scored with 2:39 remaining, off an assist from Ryan Harmon, to defeat Pearl River 1-0.

The contest was the finale of the five-game, 13th Annual Westchester vs. Rockland challenge.

“It came off a cross that was low and got through,” Moscati said. “I saw the Pearl River defender looking to clear the ball and jumped in front of it, knowing this might be our last chance to score. It deflected into my teammate and when it came bouncing back to me, I knew I had to finish it off and seal the victory. I focused on the ball and passed it into the far corner as coach (Tim) Hourahan always tells us to do.”

Scoring the game-winning goal made a lasting memory.

“The feeling was unreal, never felt such excitement in my life,” Moscati said. “I subbed back into the game with five minutes left and while on the bench I was hoping coach would put me back in. I had that feeling that I would go get the game winner no matter where I played on the field. I can hardly remember everything that was said to me.”

Moscati said that “scoring that goal is a memory I will never forget.”

Aiden Plouffe secured the Hornet win with 8 saves.

“Shoutout to all the students that come to watch us and cheer us on, it makes every moment more memorable, but most importantly our team is 3-0 and we won the day and I’m ready to keep it rolling,” Moscati said.

“Honestly it just came down to energy and focus,” Shenoy said. “Going into this game, we knew that they would be a good team and not make it easy for us, especially coming into the season down three All-Section starters and a brand new rotation of players.”

Throughout the match, Yorktown made sure to play as team and hold each other up.

“Whenever one of us messed up the rest of the team was right there to pick them up and get it back the next play,” Shenoy said. “We played as one unit through the ups and downs and that’s what allowed us to win this game.”
