Yorktown’s Cappelli earns ‘Heart of a Giant’ nomination

Posted

Yorktown High School senior Anthony Cappelli has been nominated for USA Football’s 2026 Heart of a Giant Award, presented by Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Giants.

The award recognizes Tri-State high school football players, flag football athletes, student managers and student mascots for their work ethic, character, teamwork and dedication on and off the field. Coaches nominate students for the award, with the public voting on weekly nominees.

Cappelli is a two-way starter at linebacker and tight end and a team captain. According to his nomination, he supports younger teammates, volunteers at youth football clinics and coaches a fifth- and sixth-grade team. He also attends extra-help sessions and is working toward a Regents Diploma. Cappelli previously missed eight weeks of sports after undergoing surgery for a broken finger.

Voting for Week 4 nominees is open through Oct. 18. The nominee with the most votes will become a weekly finalist. Each of the six weekly finalists will receive a $1,000 equipment grant for their high school football program. At the end of the six-week process, one grand prize winner will receive an additional $9,000 grant for their school and be recognized at a future New York Giants game.
