On Wednesday, Oct. 7, Ansley Edelmann lined up at Mildred E. Strang Middle School against John Jay and hoped to qualify for the states in the 100 fly. The magic number was 1:00.09, and she came in under it with a time of 59.99.
She described the work involved. Turns and underwaters mean a lot of practice, she said.
“This race comes down to milliseconds, so every part matters,” Edelmann said.
At the same time, the fly really fits in for her.
“I like the flow of it,” said the Yorktown High School senior. “You get into a rhythm and really start moving.”
She did have an assist that came close to home, though. Her sister, Paige, swam the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley back to back so big sister could be fresh.
“It takes a lot,” said Edelmann. “That combo is one of the hardest.”
But the favor does come with its own qualifier.
“I promised her a shopping trip,” the swimmer concluded.
