YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. —Yorktown Supervisor Ed Lachterman on Thursday (Oct. 30) released the town’s 2026 tentative budget and said there will be no increase to the property tax rate this year.
The move comes after the budget last year saw a tax rate increase of 7.4 percent.
The tentative town tax rate would remain flat at $178.14 per $1,000 of assessed value, the same as 2025, per Lachterman's tentative budget.
“This year’s budget reflects my ongoing commitment to fiscal responsibility and the delivery of high-quality essential services—all while striving to keep costs as low as possible for our residents,” Lachterman said.
But Councilwoman Susan Siegel said this is not at all a 0 percent increase.
“Water, refuse and EMS taxes are going up,” she said, adding that the pending 2026 change in how sewer service is paid for will impact the sewer tax for the 8,100 taxpayers in the town's 12 separate sewer districts. While some sewer taxes may go down, taxpayers will see a new charge on their water bills based on their water consumption.
In a letter to taxpayers, Lachterman said the budget was designed to ensure the town could “meet all contractual obligations, comply with unfunded mandates from the state government [and] provide necessary coverage and support for our dedicated employees .”
The town tax portion of the property tax bill covers three funds: general, library and highway.
Lachterman noted several outside cost pressures, including higher electricity rates, tariffs on key materials, rising supply costs and increased health insurance premiums.
Town taxes fund the general operating budget and account for about 12 percent of a resident’s total property tax bill.
The Town Board will review the spending plan in the coming weeks and meet with department heads from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, and Friday, Nov. 7, in the Town Hall board room to identify possible savings or adjustments. The sessions are open to the public.
In the weeks that follow, a revised budget will be released for public review and comment. The Town Board’s budget hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Town Hall. The start time is one hour earlier than the board’s typical meeting time.
Residents can now review the 2026 tentative budget on the town’s website.
